Preserving our past for our future.

Wake County’s non-profit historic preservation organization. Capital Area Preservation (CAP) works to secure a place for our historic resources in Wake County’s future through programs of protection, promotions and education. Our office is located at 1101 Hanes Street. Raleigh, NC. Suite 001, in the historic Pilot Mills Complex.

Protect

CAP protects Wake County’s historic resources with two goals in mind — the physical safeguarding of historic structures, sites and landscapes and the assurance that by continued use, our historic resources will remain fixtures in their communities, providing economic and aesthetic benefits for generations to come. Promote

CAP promotes awareness of the value of historic preservation thorough a wide range of programs and initiatives. including the annual Wake County Preservation Celebration at one of Wake County’s Historic Landmarks, where new landmark plaques are presented to newly designated Wake County Landmarks. We also host our annual Anthermion award to recognize outstanding historic preservation.

Educate

CAP’s educational activities draw attention to the vital role that historic preservation plays across Wake County and beyond. Some recent events and programs include a 5k for Historic Preservation, Landmarks Tours of Garner, Cary, Wake Forest and other Wake County communities and travel programs to Savannah, Charleston, the Shenadoah Valley, and the James River Plantations among other locations.
