The Mills House is an early twentieth-century single-story Queen Anne Cottage. With its steeply pitched roof and tall interior corbelled brick chimneys, the Mills House is an excellent example of the pyramidal cottage, a house type commonly constructed in the first quarter of the 20th century. Other notable features include an ell addition with exterior chimney, wrap-around porch with squared molded supports (partially enclosed), front hip dormer with three typically Victorian windows (one pane surrounded by smaller panes,), and 2/2 sash windows. The house retains a high integrity of historic elements, mostly in good condition, including hardwood floors, wood doors, wood trim, extensive tongue-and-groove beadboard and flushboard paneling throughout the interior, exterior clapboard siding and original exterior windows.
The house is currently included in the Town of Cary 2011-2013 Historic Resources Survey and Inventory list. As part of an ongoing Town of Cary Rezoning case, the house and new lot shall be protected by an historic preservation easement. The structure must be relocated from its current location prior to restoration. The home is being offered by the current owner for free, with owner to negotiate potential sharing of relocation expenses to purchaser lot.
